We are also pleased to announce that we will now be offering in-home consultations in both Charlottesville and Richmond. So whether you need design help or just want us to come measure your windows or template your window seats we can do it. We will charge a minimal fee to cover costs. If you’re in Richmond please email Diana Vicenti and in Charlottesville please email Michelle Hooper. Both Diana and Michelle have many years of residential design and decorating experience.
Here, at U-Fab, we do our very best to help your home become a custom showcase of your style. Whether it’s simply cutting your fabric that you selected or helping you narrow down your choices, we are here to help.
As you may know, we can do all the custom sewing for you. Draperies, pillows, bedding, roman shades, valances, reupholstery and even our custom furniture line. In addition to all the custom work we do, we also offer In-Home Consultations. For a small and reasonable fee ($100), our designers will come to your home, discuss your style, take measurements (if needed), help select paint colors and help you make a final decision. It starts out with a conversation, either in store or over the phone, and ends with our designers making a date to come to your home.
We have two fantastic designers that are eager and excited to come help you along the way. I recently sat down with Michelle, our in-home consultant from Charlottesville for a little one-on-one.
Will: We are really excited to offer this service to our customers. This is something that we have been wanting to do for some time. Ladies, tell us a little about yourself and how you got into this design world.
Michelle: I have been married for 25 years and have 4 children; 3 daughters that are grown and on their own and 1 son ready to start school at William & Mary in the fall. I have been doing this for over 20 years. I previously owned a small decorating business which included a workroom to provide custom products for the home from concept to completion for new and return customers. I have been excited to join the U-fab’s family as we keep expanding. I love working with people and assisting them in creating the vision they have for their homes and businesses.
Will: What made you decide to work at U-fab?
Michelle: I decided I wanted to work with a team, as oppose to working in a workroom. I enjoy working one on one with clients and U-Fab allows me to do that. Another reason is that U-fab offers a variety of products and services, to my clients that I couldn’t offer on my own.
Will: What is your favorite part of your job?
Michelle: My favorite part of the job is going to in-home consults and the one on one time! It is key to really helping a client find what they are looking for and their personal style. Plus, I really enjoy seeing the finished project and how it works perfectly in their space.
Will: Do you have any advice for people who are planning on redecorating?
Michelle: It is important to take it one room at a time. It is very easy to get extremely overwhelmed by all the decisions that need to be made. Take it one room at a time. When you try to do too much, all at once, mistakes can happen.
Will: What is the first step one should take to start decorating?.
Michelle: I say, prioritize what is important to you or what is needed. Then make a list of projects and the order that you would like them done in. Also, determining your budget, according to your projects, is important.
Will: What is your favorite style that is trending now?
Michelle: I am loving the ability to mix and match patterns, design, furniture and color. It’s no longer necessary to follow all of the rules as in the past. Contemporary with an antique in the mix, traditional furniture with modern fabrics, shabby chic with bold colors, it all works, as long as you love it.
Will: What is your personal style?
Michelle: I tend to lean more towards an old world/Tuscan flair. I love having antiques spread throughout and re-purposing furniture.
Will: Are there any tricks of the trade you would like to share with us?
Michelle: Keep your large items neutral and then you can change the look more frequently at a minimal cost. Changing out a few pillows and accessories is way more budget friendly than changing out your sofas and chairs.
Will: What is your favorite possession in your home?
Michelle: I don’t really have just one. I love the antique family heirlooms and furniture I have found at thrift/antique shops. And I do have a beautiful dresser that my husband surprised me with after I had mentioned just a “few” times how much I admired it.
Will: In your opinion, what is the one thing that can change a room?
Michelle: Creating balance. The placement, dimension and design of your furniture, fabric, and accessories should have some form of balance.
Will: Why should I pay someone to come to my home?
Michelle: Because we have the experience and knowledge that is needed to take detailed measurements as well as being able to advise you in what will work best in your space. Pictures are helpful but they don’t give us the detailed information that is necessary when redecorating a room.
Will: Why should you choose U-Fab?
Michelle: Because we are a team of professionals that desire to provide you with a quality, custom product at an affordable price. We all want to help make your home more beautiful.
